22 members of the JFK Business Professionals of America team

The JFK Business Professionals of America (BPA) team is once again showcasing their championship skills at the state competition!

For the second year in a row, Kennedy High School students have qualified for the BPA State Leadership Conference and Competition. The team will compete against high school students from across the state in events such as computer animation, computer modeling, graphic design, business & law ethics, personal financial management, and more.

“Being part of BPA helps students prepare for the future,” says Eric Martinez, the BPA sponsor for JFK. “For the entrepreneurship competition, students were given a prompt back in September. They must create a video, graphic, or product to present in front of a judge.”

Renee Castillo is one of eight returning students heading back to the state competition. As part of the team, she has gained lifelong skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, time management, and problem-solving. This year, she has even bigger goals for herself.

“Seeing how far I’ve come, and watching my designs advance to state, makes me feel very proud of myself and my work,” says Castillo. “I am looking forward to competing again and hope to advance to the finals—and possibly nationals.”

Much like Castillo, Senior Marissa Santillan is also excited about returning to the state competition. Now in her fourth year with BPA, she credits the program with helping her become a better student.

“I’ve realized that I can do anything I put my mind to,” says Santillan. “BPA has taught me to be confident and to keep pushing myself outside my comfort zone.”

Castillo echoes that sentiment, adding that she has grown as both a leader and a competitor since joining the team.

“BPA has helped me become my most confident self,” says Castillo. “I always try to support my peers by ensuring they have everything they need before they present or compete.”

As the team prepares to head to Dallas at the end of the month, Martinez emphasizes the invaluable learning experiences that BPA provides.

“Students are learning to network with industry professionals from San Antonio and across the state,” says Martinez. “BPA gives students the opportunity to travel beyond San Antonio and explore both academic and career opportunities.”

For Santillan, the most exciting part of BPA is the chance to connect with students from across Texas.

“Getting to collaborate and meet new people who share my interests has been an amazing experience,” says Santillan.

The Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference & Competition is February 27-March 2. If your student is interested in learning more about BPA, contact Eric Martinez at 210-898-4100.
