One of Disney’s most beloved musicals is coming to the stage at Stafford Visual & Performing Arts Elementary.

“Our 5th-grade students have the exciting opportunity to be part of The Lion King,” says Stafford VPA Principal Melissa Machado. “Every role, whether in the spotlight or behind the scenes, is vital to the success of the show. Each student’s contribution is valued and essential.”

Under the watchful eye of SVPA theater teacher Ms. Shapiro, all 5th-grade students will help bring The Lion King to life as they learn what it takes to create and perform a stage show. Every aspect of the production is student-led. While some students will perform on stage, others will explore running backstage operations and the technical aspects of performance. Students will also design and create the sets and costumes to transform SVPA into the Pride Lands of Africa. Art students will collaborate with Ms. Waid on sets and costumes, some will work with Ms. Garnica to develop dance and choreography. Meanwhile, music students are learning the songs that bring the performance to life with the guidance of Mr. Trejo and Mr. Aguilar.

The opportunity to present a production of this magnitude is not taken for granted by the students and staff at SVPA. Beyond performance skills, students are developing confidence, communication, and collaboration—skills that will benefit them in the classroom and beyond.

“Theater encourages our scholars to step out of their comfort zones, express themselves creatively, and learn to work as part of a team. These are skills that will serve them not only in school but in all aspects of life moving forward,” says Machado.

Principal Machado acknowledges the challenge of bringing The Lion King to the stage, but the joy of watching her students collaborate makes the effort worthwhile.

“Watching these students step into their roles, embrace their strengths, and support each other through every challenge reminds me of the incredible potential within each of them,” says Machado. “This show isn't just about the songs or the dances—it’s about the sense of community that lasts long after the curtains fall.”
