Welcome to Safe* Images (& Audio too!)
This site was created out of a concern for my peers who were just beginning to create their own webpages on our school website. What many of you may not know is the unauthorized usage of copyrighted images copied from the web is crime called copyright infringement. Punishment of copyright infringement tends to vary by country. Convictions may include jail time and/or severe fines for each instance of copyright infringement. Here in the U.S., willful copyright infringement carries a maximum penalty of $150,000 for each instance. Disputes are most often are resolved through direct negotiation with the offending party via notice and take down process, monetary penalty, or civil litigation. Cases of a more egregious nature will incur some combination of or all resolutions discussed earlier.
With this situation in mind this site attempts provide a safe harbor for my peers in education to search for and find images, photos, and animations that they may use on their webpages. The links listed below are primarily to sites that host pictures known to exist within the public domain and/or are here because the author of said images has given their permission. *That being said some of these sites host pictures that are not free and I must make it clear that anyone who uses images found online must do their own due diligence to ensure what they are doing is indeed legal. Images that are Royalty-Free are not free until you pay for the privilege and that privilege has its limits which vary from author to author. As educators we must read the fine print at all times. The links on this site will take you to the permissions or attributions page of their sites, if one exists; from there you can search for your images.
